The National Gallery of Jamaica’s Last Sundays programme continues on November 24, 2013, with a full and exciting programme of activities for the day. Doors will open from 11 am to 4 pm.

The programme will start at 11 am with a gallery – based yoga class, titled ‘Yoga and Art in Motion,’ presented by Nadine McNeil (Universal Empress) and inspired by Matthew McCarthy’s Put Dis on Page 2 installation, which was featured in the recently closed New Roots exhibition. A contribution of JA$1000 is required from participants and full proceeds will go to the National Gallery’s outreach programme. Participants should also bring a yoga mat for the class.

Jamaica Journal

The next programme item will be the launch of the latest edition of the Jamaica Journal, Volume 34, No. 3, at 1:30 p.m. The Jamaica Journal is the flagship publication of the Institute of Jamaica and features a range of research and review articles related to history, the arts and science.

For art lovers, there is a review of the 2012 National Biennial by Charles Campbell and an article on the About Face project, an online exhibition project curated by the late Dr. Petrine Archer – Straw and Dr. Claudia Hucke, which revived and examined the groundbreaking Face of Jamaica travelling exhibition of 1963 – 64.

The Journal also features tributes to leading figures in the arts who passed away including the Hon. Maurice Facey, OJ who was the National Gallery’s founding Chairman and a major patron of the arts, as well as Dr. Petrine Archer – Straw, a past employee and board member of the Gallery and an artist in her own right.

The day will conclude with a special happening around Matthew McCarthy’s Put Dis on Page 2 installation, where visitors will be given a last opportunity to make their marks, with coloured chalk, on this very interactive work of art. This part of the programme will start at 2:30 p.m. and will be accompanied by music.

As is now customary, admission to the NGJ will be free on Sunday and, other than the Yoga class, all programme items are also free, including tours and children’s activities. The gift and coffee shop will be open, with new items in the gift shop for the Christmas Season as well as copies of the Jamaica Journal. Contributions to the donations box are welcomed to help fund programmes, including Last Sundays.
